The Colombia program

The Bogotá skyline

Why do some intended parents look at Colombia?

Colombia has a substantial private healthcare sector and fertility institutions, and cities such as Bogotá and Medellín offer relatively complete medical, housing and living services. Reasons intended parents consider Colombia include:

  • Concentrated assisted reproduction resources
  • Clinics and lawyers serving international clients
  • Growing translation and coordination resources beyond Spanish
  • Overall cost may be lower than some US programs
  • A degree of social acceptance of diverse family forms
  • International families have completed assisted reproduction and birth registration there

There are also aspects that need careful assessment:

· No single comprehensive surrogacy statute

· Lawyers, clinics and registries may handle matters differently

· Birth registration and parentage depend on case specifics

· International parents must also handle nationality, passport, travel documents and return formalities

· Programs run long and can be affected by policy and administrative changes

PuhuSpring therefore never describes Colombia as "zero risk" or "legally airtight." We help you decide on the basis of real conditions.

Is surrogacy in Colombia legally grounded?

Colombia's Constitutional Court has addressed surrogacy, assisted reproduction, children's equal rights, nationality, birth registration and family relationships in several cases. The more accurate current understanding is:

  • Surrogacy is practiced in Colombia
  • It is not comprehensively regulated by a dedicated national statute
  • Children born through surrogacy have basic rights and the right to non-discrimination
  • Parentage, birth registration and documentation pathways are handled case by case
  • Courts and authorities continue to develop regulation

Before starting, obtain a written opinion from a licensed Colombian lawyer, and understand the parentage, nationality and documentation requirements of your own country of nationality or residence.

What is living in Bogotá like?

Bogotá is Colombia's capital and one of its main medical hubs, with large hospitals, private clinics, malls, apartments, international schools and relatively complete urban services.

The altitude is high, and some new arrivals experience headaches, fatigue or disturbed sleep. Safety and convenience vary considerably by district, so choose housing with transport, hospital proximity, controlled access and night-time travel in mind.

Check visa, entry, vaccination, insurance and airline requirements against the rules in force at the time of travel rather than relying on past experience.

How should I prepare cash and payment methods in Colombia?

We suggest preparing all of the following:

  • A Visa or Mastercard usable abroad
  • A small amount of US dollars in cash
  • A reasonable amount of local pesos
  • A backup bank card
  • Overseas transaction capability and SMS verification enabled with your bank

Do not carry excessive cash. Check exchange rates and fees before converting, and keep emergency reserves. Some medical, legal or government services require specific payment methods — confirm in advance.

Wondering which partner fits your situation?

We compare countries and institutions against your family situation, budget and documentation pathway.
